10.45am – 11.30am: Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs In Early Years

Fiona Holiday, Trainer, Consultant and Play Therapist, Connection Works

Many children come to us having experienced stressful events or environments and these can have an impact on development and behaviour. This is an introduction to how our bodies and minds can respond to adversity and trauma and why young children’s brains are particularly vulnerable. We will look at how we can respond to support children and families and why harnessing the power of connection is so important.

11.45am – 12.30pm: Smiles and Laughter in the Early Years

Francesca Cornwall, Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies

In this fascinating seminar talk Francesca will focus on what smiles and laughter represent, how you can consciously cultivate them in practice and the benefits in doing so. The seminar will be underpinned by research and evidence and will briefly explore the cognitive psychology behind smiles and laughter.  It will also put into context why this should be a priority in practice i.e. exposure to smiles is a proven de-stressor thus relevant to the current mental health situation in the sector, and Francesca will offer examples of how this can be applied in practice.

1.45pm – 2.30pm: Nature and Environmental Sustainability

Kate Peach, Managing Director, Each Peach Childcare

Many nurseries are recycling, using reusable nappies, growing vegetables for plant based diets, using wormeries and much more – all of these things are fantastic for our environment. But… do our children understand what is happening, why it’s happening and how it’s happening? Each Peach Childcare and Forest School teach their children about environmental day to day learning in many different ways and they gain valuable experience in a calm and nurturing environment.
