John Warren has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of outstanding services to early years education, safeguarding, and community support, following a career spanning more than four decades.
Beginning their career in 1983, John Warren has worked continuously within the early years sector, starting as a nursery nurse for a local authority before progressing into roles as a family centre officer and community development worker, supporting children and families in areas of significant deprivation.
Alongside their professional work, John Warren has also contributed extensively in a voluntary capacity. This includes volunteering with Merton Survivors supporting adult survivors of child sexual abuse and working as an HIV/AIDS trainer for a local authority in the early 1990s, at a time when public understanding was limited and stigma was widespread. These roles reflected a longstanding commitment to safeguarding, public education, and compassionate community support.
John Warren later served as a local authority inspector for 10 years, followed by seven years as an Ofsted inspector, contributing to national standards, safeguarding practice, and quality improvement across early years settings. In recent years, they made a deliberate return to frontline and regional leadership roles, working with organisations including Kidsunlimited and Asquith Nurseries, before establishing their own consultancy.
John Warren is currently a Director of a bespoke nursery franchise company, continuing to shape practice, mentor leaders, and champion high-quality, inclusive early years provision.
Throughout their career, John Warren has been a strong advocate for greater diversity within the early years workforce, including encouraging more men to consider careers in early childhood education. As one of relatively few men working in the sector at the time they began their career, they have consistently highlighted the value of positive male role models for children, while also emphasising that progress has been shaped and supported by the knowledge, leadership, and collaboration of female colleagues throughout their professional journey.
Speaking about the award, John Warren said:
“I am deeply proud and humbled to receive the British Empire Medal. Early years education has been my life’s work, and I have been fortunate to work alongside exceptional colleagues, predominantly women whose commitment, expertise, and support have shaped both my career and the sector itself. This recognition belongs as much to them, and to the children and families we serve, as it does to me.”
The British Empire Medal recognises meritorious service worthy of recognition by the Crown and is awarded to individuals who have made a significant and sustained contribution to their field.
John Warren added:
“Early years work is often invisible, but its impact lasts a lifetime. I hope this award shines a light on the importance of investing in young children, in the people who care for them, and in building a workforce that reflects the diversity and strength of our communities.”
